Supposed iPhone 6 frame leaks: it’s ultra-thin and not very Apple-like

The notoriously unreliable Digitimes last month called for a larger size iPhone in May and today Chinese website Huanqiu reiterated that an iPhablet would arrive in time for the next Galaxy S smartphone confirmed for May 2014.
The next iPhone – let’s call it the iPhone 6 for the convenience sake - is generally thought tocome in two sizes, one 4.7-inch and the larger one with a phablet-grade screen measuring a whopping 5.7 inches diagonally.
And now, images of an alleged frame have appeared online to suggest a notably thinner appearance compared to the current-generation iPhone 5s. Could this part be genuine? My two cents are right below…
A pair of photographs seen top of post were posted by Chinese leaker website C Tech.
Not much to be gleaned from the low-resolution shots other than the visibly thinner frame versus the current-generation Apple handset.
Bear in mind that in the run-up to the official iPhone 5s announcement C Tech leaked a number of parts which later proved authentic. As for this part, maybe it’s an early trial production part though it doesn’t look genuine to me.
It could be also an aftermarket component, a hoax or simply one of the parts belonging to an iPhone prototype that never materialized.
For starters, what’s up with the edges having an old style roundedness to them? To me, this looks like a mid-plate, a design Apple long abandoned in favor of Unibody construction.
For additional analysis, read Eric Slivka’s take over at MacRumors.
With that off our backs, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that upcoming gadgets will be thinner than the ones they replace, courtesy of manufacturing technology advances and the ever-shrinking components.
Much of the next iPhone’s supposed thinness should be the work of its presumably larger form-factor making additional room for components such as the wireless and memory chips, the main processor, the cameras and the battery.
The media is of course quick to spell doom for Apple unless it jumps on the phablet bus. Take, for example, a recent write-up by Gareth Beavis over at TechRadar:
I don’t mean to sound alarmist, but 2014 could well be the year that Apple makes its biggest mistake in recent history.
No, I’m not talking about the iWatch – I still think that could actually be rather good – no, Apple has to, HAS TO, bring out a large screen version of the iPhone or it’s going to really struggle to stay relevant in a rapidly changing world.
Countering his notion is Ben Bajarin who reminds us Apple hasn’t become so successful by skating where the puck is. “Apple has customers not competition,” he explains:
Folks claim that because Apple’s competition is doing something that Apple should also or they will lose. Yet what I love about Apple’s strategy is that it is never around what the competition is doing. Apple marches to beat of their own drum.
Apple has customers not competition. The decisions they make as a company are not based around what their competition is doing but around what is best for their customers. Like it or not, this is their strategy.
Sounds just about right to me, which isn’t saying that an Apple phablet of sorts isn’t being cooked up in Jony Ive’s kitchen as we speak.
In fact, when you take into account what Tim Cook & Co. have done last year with the iPad Air and the iPad mini with Retina display, it’s becoming clear that 2014 could very well be the year of two form-factor iPhones, both based on exactly the same internals and design, the only difference being the screen size and price.
Make sense?
Does Apple really HAVE TO bring out a larger screen iPhone in 2014 or else…?

Yelp updated with local movie listings, in-app ticket purchasing, and more

Yelp has posted a nice little update for its iOS client today. The update, which brings the app to version 7.4, sports a number of new features including movie listings and in-app movie ticket purchasing courtesy of Fandango.
Also new in the app is in-line review business photos. Yelp now shows business photos taken by Yelp users next to their review, so you can get a better idea of how popular a club is, or how delicious a particular entree was…
Here’s the full 7.4 change log:
    - We’re now showing business photos from Yelpers next to their reviews. No more needing to imagine just how decadent the dessert was or how hoppin’ the club was, just take a look!
    - We’re also now showing current movie listings and showtimes at your local theater. Thanks to our friends at Fandango, you can purchase your ticket right from the page. So stop stalling and go see the new Hobbit movie, we know you want to.
    - Happy holidays from the Yelp Mobile team!
Yelp has been making some major moves with its service, and subsequently its mobile app, over the past several months. In November, it added a new SeatMe feature for making reservations at popular food and drink locations.
If you’d like to check out the new Yelp app, you can find the latest version in the App Storefor free.

Instapaper goes free as Apple’s App of the Week

Apple has named the popular read-it-later app Instapaper its App of the Week for this week. This means that through next Thursday, you’ll be able to pick up the application for both your iPhone and iPad, for free—a savings of $4.
For those unfamiliar with the app, Instapaper bills itself as the simplest way to save and store articles for reading. You can save content on virtually any device, like a bookmark, and return to it later for reading at your convenience…
Here are some of Instapaper’s more notable features:
    Instapaper Core Features:
    - Save most web pages as text only, stripping away the full-sized layout to optimize for the iPhone and iPad screens.
    - Store up to 500 articles on your iPhone or iPad, and store unlimited articles on the Instapaper website.
    - Read offline, even on airplanes, subways, on elevators, or on Wi-Fi-only devices away from Internet connections.
    - Send to Instapaper from 150 other iPhone and iPad apps.
    Additional Features:
    - Adjustable fonts, text sizes, line spacing, and margins
    - Dark mode and brightness control for night reading
    - Automatic Dark and Sepia Mode switching for sunset times in your location
    - Sort your list of unread items by popularity, date, article length, and shuffle
    - Filter your list of unread items by reading time
And here are a few more screenshots for good measure:

I personally use Pocket myself, but the tower of accolades for Instapaper is tall. It’s been featured in both Apple’s iPhone and iPad App Hall of Fames, as well as several publications, and it has won a number of Editor’s Choice Awards.
I’d recommend grabbing it even if you don’t plan on using it right away. Instapaper isavailable in the App Store for both the iPhone and iPad, for a limited time, for free.

Walmart to start selling iPhone 5c for $27, 5s for $127 this Friday

The Los Angeles Times is reporting this evening that, as part of a holiday sale, Walmart plans to begin offering the iPhone 5c for $27 and iPhone 5s for $127 with a two-year contract from AT&T or Verizon this Friday.
Now, we’ve seen several deals on these two handsets over the past couple of weeks, but many of those were Black Friday specials that have since expired. So if you’re in the market right now, this may be your best bet…
“As part of a holiday sale starting Friday, Wal-Mart plans to offer the iPhone 5c for $27 with a two-year contract from AT&T or Verizon. That’s a huge discount on the iPhone 5c, a $99 model that Apple introduced just three months ago.
The iPhone 5c has struggled to sell and Wal-Mart has been discounting it since it was released in September. Friday’s sale price won’t be as good at what Wal-Mart offered on Black Friday — $45 for an iPhone 5c with a $75 gift card thrown in — but you’ll be hard pressed to find the iPhone 5c for cheaper than $27.”
Rodriguez doesn’t mention a specific model for either of the two iPhones, but we’re guessing that the deal applies to the 16GB versions of both. Also, it’s worth repeating again that these prices include a 2-year contract.
Walmart’s Friday sale also includes other electronics, video games, toys and clothing. The event is set to kick-off Friday morning at 8 am local time and sale prices are good through December 24, or while supplies last.

Twitter 6.0 is out with new design, DM photo-sharing and more

Twitter has updated its official iOS client today, bringing the app to version 6.0. The update is a fairly significant one, bringing about a new look and feel for the app, as well as photo-sharing for direct messages, improved search and more.
The new look pushes the UI of the Twitter app further into iOS 7 territory. There’s more white spacing—the menu bar at the bottom is now all white— and texts and graphics seem flatter. And Twitter has added various other enhancements…
    Here’s the 6.0 change log:
    New design.
    - Refreshed look and feel. Home, Activity and Discover now available by swiping in Timelines. Easier access to DMs.
    Share photos in Direct Messages.
    - Send and receive photos via DMs.
    Notifications from your network.
    - Choose to view replies, retweets, and favorites from only the people that you follow.
    Search got even easier.
    - Access tweets from people you follow and near you, directly from search results.
    Safari Reading List support
    - Save web articles to read later with Safari Reading List
I actual really like the design tweaks Twitter has made today, and I especially like that they’ve simplified the menu bar. Where as before it read Home-Connect-Discover-Me, now it reads Timelines-Notifications-Messages-Me. Much more clear.

Fantastical 2 updated with support for TextExpander 2.3 and Waze maps

My favorite calendar app for iOS—Fantastical 2—has been updated with a few new features that you should know about. First up is support for the latest version of TextExpander. As we told you about in an earlier post, TextExpander was forced to change its approach to sharing snippets. As a result, any app that features TextExpander support must be updated to retain snippet functionality.
The second feature to be found in Fantastical 2′s latest update is support for Waze. If you have the GPS and navigation app installed on your iPhone, you can now upon location links using Waze instead of Apple Maps or Google Maps. These, and other changes make the cut in Flexibits’ latest update to Fantastical. Check past the break for the full change log.

New TextExpander Snippets link and Open Locations in Waze support
Along with the aforementioned updates come the obligatory bug fixes, including a fix for editing recurring Google Calendar events. Here’s a list of everything included with Fantastical 2.0.3
    • TextExpander support now requires TextExpander 2.3 or later
    • Added option to open maps in Waze
    • Fixed problems when editing recurring events with Google Calendar
    • Fixed an issue where future events wouldn’t load if lots of reminders exist
    • Various bug fixes and improvements
Fantastical 2.0.3 can be downloaded right now from the App Store. The total size of the update is 16.4MB, and it’s a free update for existing users. New users can get in the game for $3.99, a fair price for what is widely regarded as the best calendar app available on iOS.

Square introduces new card reader developed by Apple’s Lightning plug designer

Square unveiled a new version of its Square Reader accessory today, which is used to input credit and debit cards into the Square app. It says the new Reader is roughly 45% thinner than its predecessor, and is more accurate at reading cards thanks to its new design.
But what makes the new device really interesting is who designed it. According to a report from Wired, Square’s new ultra-thin card reader was developed by a team led by Jesse Dorogusker—a former Director of Engineering at Apple and developer of the Lightningplug…
Here’s Wired’s Kyle VanHemert in a profile about designing the new Square Reader:
“Jesse Dorogusker is used to working tiny. Before becoming Square’s VP of Hardware, he spent eight years leading the accessories division at Apple, heading the development of the works-both-ways Lightning connector. With the new Reader, he had the chance to take a crack at a flagship product.”
VanHemert goes on to explain how Dorogusker and his team were able to create the new Reader that was both slimmer and more accurate than beforet. The process is interesting, and actually sounds a lot like what Dorogusker did at Apple with the Lightning connector.
If you’re interested, the new Square Reader can be purchased online and in retail stores beginning in January or you can grab it for free now from Square’s website. And of course you’ll need the corresponding app, Square Register, to use it, which is free from the App Store.
For information on Jesse Dorogusker and the design process behind the new Reader, click here.

Amazon’s Cloud Drive Photos app updated with iPad support, video playback and more

Folks who use Amazon’s Cloud Drive service will be happy to hear that it has posted a significant update for its iOS Photos client this afternoon. The update, which brings the app to version 2.0, adds native iPad support, video playback and other improvements.
    Here’s the 2.0 change log:
    • Native support for iPad and iPad mini
    • Protect your personal videos in your Cloud Drive
    • Upload or download video up to 2GB or 20 minutes in length
    • Playback saved video streamed instantly to any device
    • Crash and bug fixes
Amazon introduced the Cloud Drive Photos app in May of this year, as a way of making it easier for iOS users to upload their photos and videos to their Cloud Drive accounts. It also allows them to view these files, as there’s no official Cloud Drive iOS client yet.
Of course you’ll need a Cloud Drive account to take advantage of this app, and if you don’t already have one, Amazon is giving away 5GB of storage for free. For those that do have one, you’ll want to grab this update, which you can find in the App Store for free.

Google revamps mobile News site with new design, improved navigation and more

Google today announced that it’s making a number of new changes to its mobile Google News site. Well, the changes have already been made, and News readers on Android and iOS devices should start seeing them over the next few days.
Among the changes are an improved overall look-and-feel, making it easier to read and track separate stories, and the ability to customize the web application by changing the theme from light to dark, adjusting the font size, and more…
Here are the full release notes from Google’s blog (via 9to5Mac):
“Here are just some of the highlights:
    • Improved overall look-and-feel making it easier to read and track separate stories.
    • Ability to customize the webapp to suit your taste by changing the theme from light to dark, the font size and opting for a larger “story card” with more information per story at your fingertips (from the Settings menu, at top right).
    • Simplified navigation to any section within News; just click on the Google News icon (top left) to see a list of available sections (including any custom sections you created).
    • Easier integration with Google Feedback located in the menu at the top right.
Additionally we have ensured that some favorite desktop features have been included such as:
    • A weather gadget in the Local section.
    • The popular “Editors Picks” option.
    • Social posts from Google + related to the story are included in the article cluster.
All of this can be accessed by visiting news.google.com from the Chrome/Safari browser on your iOS or Android device. Google says that it’s launching in the United States first and plans to bring the same experience to all international editions soon.

iPhone tops Yahoo UK’s 2013 tech searches

Rivals often point to Apple’s sub-20 percent share of the global smartphone market as a proof of sorts that the iPhone has run its course. In reality, the device remains the most sought-after item in technology which people searched for most on the web throughout the year, at least among the British.
According to Yahoo UK’s annual roundup of trends and stories gleaned from the billions of online searches throughout the year 2013, the iPhone was the most searched-for technology item this year. After the Apple handset, Yahoo’s UK users were most interested in Amazon’s second-ranked Kindle e-reader and Samsung’s third-placed Galaxy brand.
Apple’s iPad and Sony’s new PlayStation 4 round up the top five most searched-for tech items on Yahoo UK (the Xbox One ranked sixth)…
Here’s the whole list (via The Telegraph newspaper):
      Yahoo 2013 Tech Searches
      1. Apple iPhone
      2. Amazon Kindle
      3. Samsung Galaxy
      4. Apple iPad
      5. Sony PlayStation 4
      6. Microsoft Xbox One
      7. BlackBerry
      8. Apple iPod
      9. Nokia Lumia
      10. Sony Xperia
It’s interesting that more Brits were interested in the iPod than the Nokia Lumia handsets. And in terms of Yahoo’s top Obsessions and top-searched News Stories, the birth of Prince William and Princess Catherine’s first child, Prince George, easily leads the way.
The second most searched-for item: the iPhone.
Yahoo News senior editor Nick Petche commented:
Yahoo Year in Review is a fascinating insight into our daily search habits and the social trends of 2013. This year we were transfixed by the birth of Prince George and continued with our abiding love of gadgets and football.
Also, for the first time Yahoo looked at the UK’s ‘obsessions’ which showed how twerking, Candy Crush and even the false widow spider demanded our attention.
Yahoo’s UK users were also obsessed this year with Miley Cyrus, twerking, Candy Crush Saga (who knew?), Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad (it’s become an international obsession) TV shows, among other items.
Here are the remaining Yahoo 2013 lists.
Yahoo UK 2013 Top 10 Of Everything
      1. Royal Baby
      2. iPhone
      3. Arsenal FC
      4. Kindle Andy
      5. Liverpool FC
      6. House Prices
      7. Football Transfers
      8. One Direction
      9. iPad

      7. Madeleine McCann
      8. Michael Le Vell

      3. Susanna Reid
      4. Andy Murray
      5. Game of Thrones
      6. Candy Crush Saga
      7. Breaking Bad
      8. Gareth Bale
      9. Widow Spider
      10. Twerking
The #9 Widow Spider, you say?
Blame it on The Daily Star newspaper, which brought the story of the sightings of Britain’s most poisonous spider – the false widow. The venomous creatures with the distinctive white skull image on its back arrived from the Canary Islands 140 years ago and can kill a human being with a single bite.

While it only used to appear in warmer parts of the country like Devon, Dorset and Cornwall, widow spiders were on rampage in London and Essex in late-summer so small wonder frightened citizens took to Yahoo for advice.
Yahoo UK 2013 Most Searched Celebrities
      1. One Direction
      2. Miley Cyrus
      3. Kim Kardashian
      4. Cheryl Cole

      6. Lionel Messi
      7. Bradley Wiggins
      8. Luis Suarez
      9. Maria Sharapova
Yahoo UK 2013 Most Asked Questions
      1. When do the clocks change?
      2. What is my IP address?
      3. How do I change my password?
      4. How to make money?
      5. When is Easter?
      6. What is twerking?
      7. What Does the Fox say?
      8. How to tie a tie?
      9. How old is Cher?
      10. How to write a CV?
‘How to tie a tie?’ will never get old.
‘How to make money?’, on the other hand, just shows how a lot of people continue to be really desperate in the aftermath of the post-recession age.

Yelp updated with new SeatMe feature for making restaurant reservations

Folks looking to take advantage of the holidays this week by venturing out to their favorite eating spots may want to check out the latest version of Yelp. The iOS client was updated today with a new feature that allows you to make restaurant reservations from within the app.
The new feature is the direct result of Yelp’s summer acquisition of SeatMe, a tech start-up that developed a solution for making online reservations at popular food and drink locations, and reduces the friction between discovering a great place on Yelp and experiencing it…
      From the official Yelp blog:
You may recall that SeatMe joined the Yelp family back in July and now we’re excited to introduce the ability to book SeatMe reservations directly from a restaurant or nightlife venue’s Yelp listing! The feature is available online and on iOS and Android…
…Since waiting in line isn’t your favorite thing to do (just guessing, but pretty sure I’m right), whip out Yelp and nab a reso before you head out. Now instead of just drooling over the review highlights for Oakland, CA hot spot Hopscotch (duck fat chips and sweet potato gnocchi?!) you can take your fantasizing to the next level and snag a reservation on the spot.
Even if you’re not a foodie, SeatMe can help you plan a night out. Yelp says that 20% of SeatMe venues are bars and lounges so you can reserve a seat or a bar table at your favorite watering hole. In the iOS app, making a reservation is very quick—only took me a couple of taps.
It looks like this SeatMe feature is going to replace Yelp’s integration with OpenTable. The two companies were definitely competitors before the buyout, and in today’s blog post, Yelp’s Alex Kvamme noted that bars and restaurants “love SeatMe” because of their flat fee structure.
At any rate, you can grab the latest version of the Yelp app for iPhone and iPad in the App Store for free. Also, keep in mind that SeatMe isn’t available for all locations yet.

Amazon app redesigned for iOS 7

Just in time for the holidays, Amazon has redesigned its iPhone and iPad app for iOS 7. The update comes a week before Black Friday—the beginning of the biggest shopping weekend of the year for most retailers.
The app gives users virtually full access to the ecommerce giant’s staggering selection of products, which ranges from electronics to clothes, and everything in between. And now it looks right at home on iOS 7 devices…
I love the new look of the app, and find it easier to browse and locate things. But I also like the design of iOS 7. For those who don’t like the new “white space” design trend, you’re probably not going to like this either.
Amazon also mentions that bug fixes are included in today’s update, so unless you absolutely hate the new look, it’s probably worth upgrading. You can find the latest version of the Amazon App in the App Store for free.

Honda says iOS mirroring will be available in 2014 Civic

It looks like Honda is going to be one of the first auto-makers to ship a vehicle compatible with Apple’s new iOS in the Car feature. A representative for the company confirmed with a customer via Twitter that the tech will be available in its 2014 Civic.
For those unfamiliar with iOS in the Car, it’s essentially Apple’s next level of in-car device integration. Where ‘Eyes Free’ only let users access Siri, this will allow users to access apps like Phone, Maps, Music and more via their car’s built-in touchscreen…
Here’s the Twitter exchange via 9to5Mac:

So what does this mean? Well judging from the rep’s comments, users will be able to control their iOS devices using the 7-inch multitouch display that Honda is building into the dash of its 2014 model Civic, which is expected to go on sale in early December.
Additionally, the rep told one customer that Honda would begin rolling out Siri Eyes Free updates for existing vehicles next month as well. So current Honda car owners (presumably only later models) can expect to see that functionality in the near future.

Though it may not seem like it now, iOS in the Car is a big deal for Apple. During a quarterly earnings conference call earlier this year, Tim Cook told investors it’s a “key focus” for the company and as important to its ecosystem as iTunes or the App Store.
Several manufacturers have pledged to support the new tech, including Acura, Mercedes-Benz, Infiniti, Ferrari, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Volvo, Opel and Jaguar.

Twitter for iOS updated with new search filters and more

Twitter has updated its official iOS client this evening, bringing the app to version 5.13. The update includes improvements for Search and Discover tabs, making it easier to find the content you’re looking for.
Among these improvements are new search filters, which will allow you to quickly navigate to specific people and tweets, and toggle between relevant tweets and ‘top tweets.’ Full release notes are after the fold…
      What’s new in version 5.13:
Find exactly what you’re looking for.
•Search results now show content that is filtered to the type of moments you want.
See what’s trending on TV and close by to you.
•After you’ve browsed through all trends in Discover, you’ll see additional trends about both TV and local content.
      Better login verification.
•Take a screenshot of your verification backup code when you enroll or generate a new one
The new search filters work just as you’d expect them to, making it easier than ever to find what you’re looking for. And I imagine the new ‘nearby’ trending timeline could be cool at concerts or pro sporting events.
It’s tough for me because yeah, Twitter is doing some cool stuff with its official iOS app, but the UI just doesn’t measure up to third party apps like Tweetbot or Twitterrific. It’s too busy for me, and tough to follow.
At any rate, if you’d like to check out today’s update, you can find the latest version of Twitter for iOS in the App Store for free. And if you’re not yet, be sure to follow iDownloadBlog on Twitter by clicking here.

ZeptoLab posts teaser trailer for Cut the Rope 2

In September, Russia-based developer ZeptoLab confirmed that they were working on Cut the Rope 2—a sequel to their popular physics-based puzzler, and the fourth title in the Cut the Rope series.
It looks like the new game is going to be officially called ‘Cut the Rope 2: Om Nom’s Unexpected Adventure.’ And yesterday, the folks at ZeptoLab posted its first teaser: a 20-second clip starring Om Nom…
Here’s the video posted to ZeptoLab’s YouTube:
The brief clip doesn’t really tell us much—it’s just Om Nom sailing through a blue sky, dangling from his iconic rope as pieces of candy float by. The hashtag ‘OmNomIsMissing’ at the end may be a clue though.
Here’s the accompanying text from the above clip:
Oh my candy! Om Nom is missing! Om Nom, everyone’s favorite candy-eating monster and hero of the Cut the Rope series of mobile games, has disappeared. Based on this footage, detectives say that it appears that Om Nom was swept away by either a very large bird, or, more likely, a hot air balloon. Can you help us bring him home? We need to find Om Nom in time for the launch of Cut the Rope 2. Please let us know if you see him! #omnomismissinghttp://cuttherope.net/cuttherope2
First introduced in October of 2010, the Cut the Rope games have been downloaded more than 400 million times, and enjoy 60 million monthly users. All together, players have cut more than 60 billion ropes.
The developers say that Cut the Rope 2 is a massive step forward for the game, featuring amazing graphics, new characters, new levels and more. And it’s expected to hit App Stores this holiday season.

MapQuest app finds relevance again with beautiful iOS 7 redesign

When the subject of the best iOS maps app comes up, typically you’ll only hear a few names mentioned. There’s Apple Maps, which is the most popular by default, and Google Maps, and then a mix of WazeHopStop and other user favorites.
But today, MapQuest has thrown its name back into the conversation with its major 4.0 update. The app has been completely rebuilt from the ground up (apparently a 9-month endeavor) with an all-new look, and several handy new features…
      Here are the release notes:
Beautifully redesigned for iOS7, version 4.0 incorporates the useful features you need into precise vector maps to help you get where you need to go.
      Version 4.0 boasts:
      • Exquisite, eye-catching map styling – Our map now offers sharper detail and is much easier to read
      • Traffic conditions on route – Your route turns red (heavy) or yellow (some brake lights) to keep you informed of live traffic conditions
      • Custom home/work bookmarking – Bookmark your home and work addresses so no matter where you are, you can find your way to either at the push of a button
      • Road alerts – Get alerted to toll roads and seasonal road closures on your route
      • Sharing – Keep friends and family in the loop by sharing your location
      • Audio mute capabilities – Select the audio mute option to turn off voice-guided directions while enjoying music or making a phone call
      • Advanced search capabilities – Locate your destination faster when you search
Initial feedback for the update has been very positive. The new high resolution vector maps are gorgeous, the menus are easy to navigate, and with features like ‘Layers,’ you can see nearby gas stations, restaurants, and more with just a single tap.
I obviously haven’t had time to test out its accuracy—which is perhaps the most important feature in a maps app—but if it works half as good as it looks, it should be fine. MapQuest isfree in the App Store, but you’ll need a $4 IAP to get rid of the ads.
Have you tried the new MapQuest app yet? What do you think?
